After powering through a tasty breakfast in the in-hotel cafe we set straight off to Luxembourg After a short drive my mind was again spinning as we just drove straight over another border, into another country and another culture The country Luxembourg was absolutely stunning as we arrived, with rolling hills covered in forest, and sharp mountains with winding roads It is a genuinely beautiful country, but the city itself (also called Luxembourg) is something else It is, in a word, stunning There is a complete lack of the dirty little details that impact on a beautiful city It is full of old buildings, with artfully and sensitively constructed and designed modern buildings standing right next door The cobble streets, the abundance of greenery and the rocky cliffs defining the valley running through the city all contribute to making it a breathtaking city Although, as a side effect of everything looking so well maintained and pretty, everything is expensive, and everything is designer There are no cheapish shopsand Luxembourgers regularly drive over one of their borders (usually the German border to Trier) to do their shopping
After a bit of a kefuffel with parking (again) we set of by foot through the city, and down into the valley to see the old fortress, carved into the cliffs We wandered, crawled and climbed through the tight winding passages of this fortress, with occasional fleeting glimpses of the beautiful city
Back in Germany we headed to the Maare, in Eifel These are big mountain lakes set in picturesque farming land covered in a mixture of sprawling green fields and heavy woods We wpent an hour just wandering aimlessly and lying in the sun, taking in the odd ray or two when it headed our way
Before long we were back on the road again, feeling like Japanese tourists doing the Europe in a week method, this time headed for Nürberg Home of the famed Nürburg ring, a racetrack built by Adolf himself, and open to the public once a day for our driving pleasure We arrived at 430, and were told to wait til 545 if we wanted a run So we waited, then unpacked our bags from the boot, piled into our Turbo Volvo V70 Stationwagon, and waited alongside red Porsches, aggresive looking motorbikes and big, powerful BMWs And then we were off After a few corners we got into it, the back wheels taking a beating round the sharper turnsand then Heda decided that the whole experience was too stressful, and that i shouldnt drive! So of course i shall have to organise a return trip to this wonderful place
Then came the last leg of todays journey, the Köln stretch On arrival at Hotel Centrum, right next to the famous gothic behemoth that is the Köln Dom we headed to a local Kölsch serving (the local beer) pub for a tasty morsel before bed And then at 1130 a fuming host mother told me that if i wanted to go with her there was a disko called EdelPINK nearby, and she was going regardless I weighed out the options sleep the name of the disko the mood of Heda and decided to go along for the ride It turned out to be a small club in white and pink, with sort of soft looking walls, all contoured like candy It could have been a really awesome disko, except that there were very few people there, and noone danced Finally, just before we left, i danced once (being one of only 2 people on the floor)and it really wasnt all that bad I figured that no matter how badly i embarassed myself, what are the chances of meeting any of these people ever again?
