NOUS is hosting the Alternative Initiatives Cuba conference to be held at the Royal Institute of British Architects (66 Portland Place, London) on October 8 2010 from 2-5pm.
The conference will explore the impact of Cuba’s political and economic conditions on its architecture and speculate on the future of architecture and development in Cuba.
Participants
The event organizers have assembled a group of leading architects, academics, politicians and economists, such as Dr. Eusebio Leal, Deputy to the Cuban National Assembly of the Popular Power, Dr. Mario Coyula Cowley, vice-director of the Havana Group for the Integrated Development of the Capital, and renowned Cuban architect Ricardo Porro.

The conference is being curated by Nuria Alvarez Lombardero and Francisco Gonzales de Canales, tutors at the Architecture Association and principals of Canales & Lombardo and NOUS Founder and Director Melissa Woolford. Brett Steele, the director of the Architectural Association and Edgar Gonzales of Brisac Gonzalez will be moderators.
The NOUS Gallery
NOUS is a London-based collaborative consisting of a gallery, consultancy, and network, with an initiative to promote and facilitate realized work and research by architects and designers. NOUSРІР‚в„ў Director is Melissa Woolford, who founded the collaborative in 2007. Melissa previously worked as an architectural designer for Zaha Hadid Architects and has a Masters in Architecture from Pratt Institute. NOUS 4M, a sister company, has recently been formed to provide fabrication facilities, office space, and educational resources to architects and designers.
